"The 50mm f/1.4 USM may be a tad better at large aperture settings and surely regarding build quality but at quite hefty extra costs. If you're on a budget the 50mm f/1.8 II is a good alternative here. It may also be interesting to check out the used market for a EF 50mm f/1.8 (I) which features the same good optical formula but combined with a better construction. "So why do I own this lens? It only costs about $80. It is incredibly lightweight. It takes vastly better pictures than a mid-range mid-priced zoom. It can take a photo without flash in light that is one quarter as bright as the light required by a consumer zoom (usually these have max apertures of around f/4)."

What a great little lens! I just got it about 15 minutes ago and I am having so much fun with it already. I purchased this lens to take food photos at restaurants, but I think it's going to be great for taking portrait shots of my friends.

Prior to this lens, I've only been using the kit lens (18-55mm F3.5 - 5.6). The obvious differences are the ability to take photos in low light settings and having a very sharp picture. Using F/1.8, I can really get some nice bokeh (artistic blur outside of the focusing area).

The only fault I find with it is that it's a bit noisy with the auto focus, since it's not USM. But hey, what do you expect for $70? This lens is great bang for the buck.
