"This is an expensive high-quality lens that focusses continuously down to 1:1 (i.e., you can take a picture of something that is 24x36mm in size, the dimensions of the standard 35mm frame). The lens has an ultrasonic motor that allows manual focusing even in AF mode."

"A lens that is obviously built to last a lifetime of hard work is the way I would describe this optic although the robustness leaves it looking a little chunky. It possibly goes some way to warranting the price, which is high. Optical output is at the high end of good for the type, although it is not outstanding."

"I mentioned early in this review that the Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 L USM Macro Lens has the longest 1:1 macro working distance of any Canon lens. A minimum focus distance of 1.6 (0.48m) (measured from the sensor) is necessary to achieve the 1x maximum magnification. At this distance, the subject is imaged life size on the sensor - which makes the subject much larger than life size on most monitors..."
