The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II is a kit lens sold with the Rebel XTi/400D. One should not expect "L" lens quality such as the Canon 24-70mm L f2.8 lens.

Center sharpness at 20mm up, closed down a few f-stop is decent. At 18mm wide open this lens get very soft.

However the EF-S 18-55mm is a great little lens if you want to travel light and take shots for small prints or web size photos. The best dslr lens one can have is the one you will most likely pick it up and carry with you.

In this regard the Canon EF-s 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II is good for its value.

These are the "kit lens" that came with my Rebel XTi camera. It's nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. I was able to take some close ups and zooms with it. I've only had the lens (and the camera) for a few days, and I'm already hungry for a lens that has longer zooming capabilities. In the widest mode, it has great coverage. This is a great starter lens.
